Green Prescription (GRx) is a free programme to improve the health and wellbeing of communities through physical activity and nutrition support, impacting sustainable, healthy lifestyle behaviour change. Through education, removal of barriers, and development of personal skills GRx aims to enhance physical, mental and social wellbeing.
New and improved service delivery
As of 1 July 2020, Sport Wellington in consultation with the three District Health Boards (DHBs) has changed the way in which support is offered, and who support is prioritised for. To ensure we are meeting the needs of our participants and working to improve equitable health outcomes for Māori, Pasifika and those living in areas of high deprivation, GRx support will be delivered flexibly and adapted based on need, rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach. This will mean a more intensive service for some and a lighter touch for others.

Who is Green Prescription for?
Sport Wellington prioritises healthy lifestyle support for Māori and Pasifika (with a 70% referral target), pregnant women, and children.
How we support
We can provide support to individuals or to whole families, adapting based on need (which might be as little as a one-off contact), but could also include:
- Face-to-face consultations (in homes, in the community or online) with a Programme Advisor, with regular follow-ups for up to 12 months
- Resources and advice around healthy eating, physical activity and general wellbeing
- Motivation and goal-setting support
- Practical cooking and food workshops
- Physical activity tasters, and support to link into community events and physical activity programmes
If you’re just after direction, ideas and inspiration, why not check out our new Wellbeing Hub? This is a collection of resources, including physical activity and recipe directories, which are updated weekly.
